PETER MOORE

Will - 1741 (Douglas)

At a Consistory Court held in Balnahown July 9th 1741 Mr Peter Moore, late of Douglas, perished on the coast of England on or about the 25th of January last, intestate

The Court upon intelligence thereof hath decreed his four children vis Robert, Richard, Peter and Ester Moore joint administrator of all his goods moveable and immovable whatsoever who, being all underage, their uncles Mr John Moore, Pulroish, and Mr John Moore of Balnahow sworn supervisors together with Robert Kermod husband of Patience, the aunt

And in regard that the Court is well satisfied that it will be for the safety, good usage and better education of the children as also that the widow settles her part of the lands at Whithors upon her eldest son or the surviving heir at law after her decease, the tuition of the children and their goods is committed unto her who is sworn to perfect a just inventory of the whole effects and has given pledges vis Mr Thomas Gawn and Capt Edward Fletcher

The above sum being the whole amount of the above and within effects, the dead''s part of the same, one hundred and eighteen pounds three shillings and eleven pence halfpenny as valued by us (errors excepted) Ewan Kerruish, Edward Callow, Ewan Corlett, Robert Brown

Since the above subscription, we find that there is a parcel of barley on the other side of this leaf not valued which we now value at two pounds fourteen shillings, the dead's part of which to be added to the above is one pound seven shillings by us. The dead's part of the before going inventory amounts as above to £118/3/11½ more added for barley as above, one pound seven shillings. The gross sum £119/10/11

The estate received £89/11/1. Debts to be paid amounted to £25/13/10

At a Consistory Court in Douglas November 3rd 1741 The within inventory of the effects of Mr Peter Moore together with the above addition was now brought in by the widow and acknowledged by the four sworn men whose names are thereunto subscribed

NOTES

  1. Peter Moore was the son of Robert Moore of Polroish, and born 1706
  2. Peter was the husband of Esther Killey, youngest child of Jane Mc ylroy and Richard Killey
  3. Peter & Esther married in in Braddan in 1730, and they had five children- Robert (1732), Richard (1735), Esther (1739), Peter jnr (1741), & Isabel (1737)
  4. Peter, together with Esther's brother Charles snr, had a poignant burial entry: Mr Charles Killey & Peter Moore merchants with many passengers perished at sea. Both were buried January 25th 1740 in Braddan
  5. Esther went on to marry Richard Joiner in 1742 and had daughters Margaret (1743) & Catherine (1745)
  6. From her 1761 will, it appears that daughters Isabel and Margaret had pre-deceased their mother
  7. Sons Richard and Peter jnr also died at an early age, leaving only their oldest boy Robert
  8. Richard Joyner, who was probably a relation of Robert Joyner, the husband of Esther's aunt Margaret Mcylroy, might have been a wealthy individual so Peter's family remained comfortable
  9. In 1744 Esther inherited her father's estate apart from what he had gifted to Cath Killey, her sister, and Cath's husband John Cottiman
