Marriage Contract - 1750 (Malew)

Articles of Marriage made, concluded and agreed upon between John Quayle of Ballatrollag in the parish of Malew, and Margaret Quayle otherwise Harrison his wife for and in behalf of their son Robert QUayle on the one part and John Kewn of Castletown, slater, and Christian Kewn otherwise Bell his wife, for and in behalf of their daughter Catherine Kewn on the other part as follows:

First it was concluded and agreed upon by and between each and every of the aforesaid parties that the said Robert Quayle and Catherine Kewn shall be joined in the holy state of matrimony within one month, God and holy Church permitting the same

Secondly it is concluded and agreed upon by and between the said parties and the said John Quayle and Margaret Quayle his wife do hereby bind and oblige themselves to give and to pay unto the said young couple within six months after their marriage the sum of ten pounds, the said Robert QUayle allowing and deducting to his said father thereout whatever he at present owes his said father which is about four or five pounds, and the said John Quayle and Margaret his wife do also bind and oblige themselves to give unto the said young couple a sufficient feather bed, boster and bed clothes immediately after the said young couple's marriage, and the said John QUayle and Margaret his wife do hereby bind and oblige themselves to give their said son Robert QUayle full discharge when the said sum of four or five pounds in ... of all ....

Thirdly it is concluded and agreed upon by and between the said parties and the said JOhn Kewn and Christian his wife do hereby oblige themselves to give and pay unto the said young couple the sum of twenty pounds, that is to say ten pounds thereof to be paid immediately after their marriage and the other ten pounds after twelve months and a day from the day the young couple are married is expired and the said John Kewn and Christian his wife do hereby also give unto the said young couple the new intacks which belong to them adoining the platform under the castle in the said town of Castletown of four pence yearly Lord's rent or thereabouts to be immediately held and possessed by them after their said intended marriage and the said John Kewn doth also bind and oblige himself to slate and plaster that is to do the slater's and plasterer's work for the young couple on the house they shall build on the said intack

For the true and faithful performance of all which each and every of the said parties do hereby respectively bind and oblige themselves, their and each of their executors, administrators and assigns in the penalty and forfeiture of two hundred pounds sterling to be levied and paid according to the laws and customs of this Isle

NOTES

  1. John Quayle and Catherine Kewen were the parents of John Quayle who married Lucy Mylrea. They were also the parents of Robert QUayle who married Catherine Mylrea
  2. The senior Quayle parents were married in 1719, and the Kewen parents in 1717, both in Malew
  3. THe Marriage Contract for John Quayle and Margaret Harrison was the first surviving document that identifies the family and location of John Quayle, grandfather of the husband of Lucy Mylrea, apart from the land records which track the line of succession of their estate from 1603
  4. The Quayle estate was named Ballatrolleg
  5. Joney Madrell was the wife of John Quayle. She died in 1729
  6. Margaret Harrison died in 1777
  7. Children recorded for the couple: Jane (1720), John (1721), William (1723-1729), Robert (1725), Anthony (1727), ?Ann (1726), Isabel (1730)
